Snacks in the City: Food & Drink Gossip in Beijing

January is time for self-improvement and fitness. Gross! Nothing sends shivers down my spine like the phrases “get in shape” or, worst of all, “fit fam,” as it is my God-given duty to scour this city for palette-pleasing sources of calories. So don’t you dare, dear reader, make my job pointless under the guise of your so-called #fitlife. Did I go up a pants size after starting this job? Yes. Would I have it any other way? No.

If you must limit your consumption of burgers and tacos to Cheat Days (I’m judging you), may I suggest the following: Double down on your drinking habits. With all the calories burned at spin class, you’ll have plenty of space for meat- and gluten-free options like Negronis. I spent a great deal of November and December really leaning into my cocktail consumption, and you can too – the results of my explorations are detailed on pages 60-61 of the January issue of That's Beijing.

Here are some things you'd best be prepared to miss if you go paleo, or vegan, or gluten-free or whatever: the lavish new brunch at The Georg. New chuan’r and seafood rice at White Tiger Village. And you will not benefit from Dunkin’ Donuts’ steady march from Shunyi into the city, with its new outpost at Chaoyangmen.

But then again – TRIBE’s had some good deals on Sherpa’s recently, so maybe you’ll be fine.
